Brief History

The earliest known mention of Singapore was a 3rd century Chinese account, which described Singapore as "Pu-luo-chung" ("island at the end of a peninsula"). Little is known about the island's history at that time but this matter-of-fact description belies Singapore's colorful past.

The Malay Annals gives a vivid account of how Singapore got its present name. As the story goes, a price, Sang Nila Utama, ruler of Palembang, landed in Singapore than know as "Temasek". Here the prince show an animal, and he mistook it to be a lion, he decided to establish a settlement on the island and he named Singapura, i.e. "Lion City". The island became commonly known as Singapura by the end of the 14th century.
